"Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" is a fantasy novel written by Ransom Riggs and published in 2011. The story revolves around a young boy named Jacob Portman who embarks on a journey to discover the truth about his grandfather's mysterious past.
Jacob grows up hearing his grandfather, Abraham Portman, tell stories about a peculiar orphanage on a remote island off the coast of Wales. The children at the orphanage possess unique abilities, such as levitation, invisibility, and the ability to control fire. However, as Jacob grows older, he begins to doubt the authenticity of his grandfather's tales.
Tragedy strikes when Jacob witnesses his grandfather's gruesome death at the hands of a strange creature. Distraught and determined to find answers, Jacob convinces his reluctant father to accompany him to the Welsh island where the orphanage is said to be located.
Upon arriving on the island, Jacob discovers that the orphanage is no longer in operation, destroyed during a World War II bombing. However, he stumbles upon a time loop—a loop created by Miss Alma Peregrine, the headmistress of the orphanage. The time loop keeps the children safe from the outside world, forever stuck in September 3, 1940.
As Jacob delves deeper into the mystery, he meets the peculiar children his grandfather spoke of, each with their own unique abilities. Emma Bloom can create fire, Millard Nullings is invisible, and Olive Abroholos Elephanta floats, among others. Jacob learns that he, too, possesses a peculiar ability—he can see and communicate with the terrifying creatures called Hollowgasts, who are hunting the peculiar children.
Together with the peculiar children, Jacob battles the Hollowgasts and their leader, Mr. Barron, who is a shape-shifting Hollowgast. They must protect the time loop and prevent the Hollowgasts from capturing and consuming the children's peculiar souls, which grant immortality.
Throughout the story, Jacob unravels the truth about his grandfather's past and his own connection to the peculiar world. He learns about the importance of embracing one's peculiarities and finds a sense of belonging among the peculiar children.
The novel is filled with vintage photographs, adding a unique visual element to the story and enhancing its eerie and mysterious atmosphere. It is followed by two sequels, "Hollow City" and "Library of Souls," which continue the adventures of Jacob and the peculiar children
